Did you know that studying instrumental music can make you smart? Music teachers have known it for ages, but now scientists are proving it with scientific data: studying instrumental music while reading music is the only activity that utilizes the entire brain at the same time. This contributes to whole-brain activity and experience that can benefit higher level thinking skills. Just 15 minutes a week of private keyboard instruction, along with group singing at pre-school, dramatically improve a kind of intelligence needed for high-level math and science, suggests a study conducted by the University of California-Irvine...19 preschoolers who took the lessons showed a 46% boost in spatial IQ’s, compared to 14 students who didn’t take the lessons. Students of the arts continue to outperform their non-arts peers on the SAT, according to reports by the College Entrance Examination Board. Students with coursework/experience in music performance scored 51 points higher on the verbal portion of the SAT and 39 points higher on the math portion of the SAT than students with no coursework or experience in the arts.
